CHAPTER 14

***CHARLIE***

Charlie watched April from across camp laughing and talking with a group of the guests around the fire but didn’t try to approach her. He knew exactly what would happen if he did, the same thing that had been happening all night; she’d get up and leave. If it had been someone else, he might have thought that she was playing games with him, but he knew that wasn’t the problem. He’d pushed too hard at the lake, asked for too much without giving anything himself. It was a mistake he wouldn’t make again; he just needed a second chance.

After he’d realized what April was doing, he’d given her the space she seemed to need, but that didn’t mean that he was giving up; far from it. He wasn’t sure when everything had changed, when he stopped fighting the passion between them, and the truth was it didn’t really matter. The beautiful red head was finding her way into his heart, and nothing it seemed, not her telling him it was a bad idea, or the voice in his head telling him she was right, could stop what was happening.

Spotting his chance when the guest sitting next to her got up and left, Charlie rushed over to April and sat down next to her. “I know you’ve been avoiding me,” he said. “maybe we could go somewhere and talk.”

She looked over at him and sighed. “I guess that would be okay, but please don’t ask me to change my mind,” she said. “It wouldn’t be good for either of us, Charlie.”

He got up and held his hand out to her. “Come on, let’s go look at the stars,” he said. “I promise I won’t ask you to change your mind, but that doesn’t mean I won’t try to get you to.”

“That doesn’t sound quite right,” she said but put her hand in his and let him help her up. “Where are we going?”

“Let’s go check on the horses,” he said. “Unless you’d like a more romantic spot.”

She gave him a dirty look. “The horses are fine,” she said. “Don’t push it, Charlie.”

He raised his hands in the air. “I’m sorry, April, I really am. I just can’t seem to behave myself when you’re around,” he said, grinning at her. “But I did want to apologize for pushing you like that at the lake; I shouldn’t have. I know what it’s like to have something in your past that you’re not proud of.”

April looked up at him, then back down at the trail. “It’s more than not being proud of what I did,” she said. “It’s more complicated than that; can’t you understand that?”

“I’m trying to; that’s why I wanted to take a walk,” he said. “I’m not asking you to tell me all your secrets, but I am willing to tell you mine. Maybe then you’ll understand that you can trust me.”

She studied him for a minute. “Charlie, you don’t have to do that,” she finally said. “I’m sorry if I seem…I don’t know, cold; it’s not that I don’t like you.
